St Helens Cowley 14 Halifax ERA 20
Halifax ERA progress to next round of National Cup | 07/03/2018
HALIFAX ERA progressed into the quarter finals of the cup after a hard-fought victory over Cowley College in St Helens.
The much-awaited tie finally went ahead, another postponement would have meant that the tie would have been decided by a coin toss. That would have been unfair on two Colleges who produced a fine contest with the match in the balance until the final quarter.
It was hosts Cowley who took an early lead when Tolver Arnold burrowed over for a tie converted by Jamie Morris.
Cowley added to that second minute tie with a Morris penalty when Halifax were penalised for dissent 17 minutes later, the home side good value for their eight-point lead.
Halifax finally broke the Cowley defence when centre Myles Harrop broke free 60 metres out and outpaced the home defence for a superb solo try that was converted by Rourke Woolley who was outstanding with the boot kicking 4 from 4 goals.
Seven minutes later loose forward Titus Gwaze broke on the right and had Fin Hickey in support for a try that Woolley added the extras to, the Halifax side going into the break 12-8 ahead.
Ben Scott went over in the left corner to pull Cowley level 13 minutes into the second half, Morris booted an excellent touchline conversion to give the hosts a two-point advantage.
Halifax knew that this was a tight contest and when Cowley were penalised 23 minutes from time they opted for the two points to level the contest.
Another fine Harrop long-range solo try pushed Halifax back in front with Woolley’s conversion giving the visitors a six-point cushion.
Fourteen minutes remained and both sides had opportunities without really looking like they would add to their totals.
Both teams fielded development sides on in a very competitive friendly on the pitch next door. Big performances from Poulton, Grimley, Owens and Doyle earned them 1st team call ups. Tries from Lucas Hunter and Antonin Berk the highlight for the Halifax team.
