Wilberforce College (Hull) 20 Halifax ERA ‘A’ 18

Halifax ERA 'A' team put in spirited performance | 22/11/2017

HALIFAX travelled to east Hull for a friendly against Wilberforce College which was played on the rear field at Hull Kingston Rovers’ KCOM Stadium.
The Halifax side bared little resemblance to the side that defeated Furness Raiders a week earlier, coaches Gareth and Lee Greenwood opting to play a more youthful side against a Wilberforce outfit who were playing only their second game of the College season.

With a strong wind blowing off the Humber the first decision was to play with the elements. It didn’t take Halifax too long to reach the Wilberforce line but they had their own defending to do as the home College powered forward.

However, it was Halifax who opened the scoring on 12 minutes with prop forward Dylan Harley-Poulton powering over after Jordan Owens had been halted inches short earlier in the set. Rourke Woolley added the conversion.

If anything the keenness of the visiting side to dominate their opponents proved their undoing in a period of play that saw their hosts level the score. Halifax were guilty of being too quick off their line gifting penalties, possession and territory to Wilberforce.

Alex Holdstock was a prominent figure for Wilberforce throughout and it was his offload that opened the Halifax defence for Callum Stark to score, Holdstock converting.

Woolley’s restart was crafty. Kicking low to avoid the ball sailing out of play on the full the Wilberforce side knocked on and nearly conceded a try but their cover defence came to their rescue.

It was the visitors who scored next. Woolley was the victim of a high tackle and from the resulting penalty Luke Doyle went close. From dummy-half Jake Samociuk-Barnes spotted a opening and jinked his way through with Woolley adding the extras.

Stark grabbed his second try, Holdstock failing to convert. However, in between the try and conversion Harley-Poulton said something out of turn and was shown a yellow card by referee Mike Patterson.

With Halifax a man down scrum-half Lapong Patrick neatly kicked across the visiting defence for winger James Grainger to score an unconverted try. That gave the hosts a 14-12 interval lead.

Six minutes after the break referee Patterson showed a yellow card to Harry Medlicott, the home second row having held back a Halifax player.

However, the visitors were unable to make use of the one-man advantage. Within three minutes Harley-Poulton was once again showed a yellow card, once again for speaking out of turn.

With both sides down to 12 on the pitch a stunning break from Daniel May saw the stand-off race from deep inside his own half for a brilliant solo try. With the influential Woolley off the field injured Owens added the conversion for a four-point lead.

As the visitors looked to extend their advantage they had their pockets pinched when Chris Rollinson intercepted for a try which once again was converted by Holdstock.

With 15 minutes remaining Halifax tried hard to battle the elements though Holdstock twice used the wind to keep Halifax pinned deep in their own territory.

In the end they couldn’t get that final break that they needed for victory and had to settle for second best on the day.
